1974 BMW 2002 Sunroof Coupe

This 2002 has been well maintained and kept in remarkable condition. It has not been fully restored but has had a light cosmetic freshening with one respray. The paintwork is very good with a glossy finish and nice quality, alone with an excellent straight body that is solid and rust-free with a couple of minor imperfections. The black vinyl interior is untouched and well-preserved with basketweave inserts, original door panels, and a crack-free dash in great condition. Correct VDO gauges with all the switches in good condition. Loop carpeting has also been replaced and is in new condition with a nice headliner. The steering wheel has been upgraded to a Nardi wood wheel but comes with the original steering wheel as well.

Mechanically, the engine runs strong and performs well with a smooth-shifting 4-speed manual transmission as well as good synchros, clutch, and four-wheel disc brakes. It has been maintained over the past 5 years by Jeff Tighe at TP Motor Sports in Santa Ana, California and over $5,000 has been spent. The engine bay and trunk are completely untouched and original. The undercarriage is all original and very solid with no signs of repairs on the floor pans and no structural issues. However, there is some minor rust on the passengers' front floor pan. XXR wheels have been installed for a sportier look. Complete with spare rim, jack, lug wrench, and owner's manual, it is getting harder and harder to find BMW 2002 in this condition!

History of the 1968-1976 BMW 2002

The 2002 is perhaps the most famous of BMW's “New Class” line, and it revitalized the Bavarian automaker's historically underwhelming international reputation. The world was captivated by the 2002's attractive blend of power, agility, and style in addition to its reasonable price tag. 2002's were offered in two varieties in the U.S.: the single carb'ed, 100hp base 2002, and the über-sporty 2002tii. Both were powered by a 2.0 liter SOHC I4, but the tii added mechanical fuel injection to wring out 130hp. Other variations included the cabriolet, targa, a three-door touring model, a twin-carbureted ti, and a rare turbo, all intended for European consumption only. 1973 yielded a major aesthetic redesign, with rectangular taillights replacing the round taillight, and elongated bumpers added to meet U.S. safety regulations.
